“India is home to all faiths, and it has welcomed both atheists and believers. We have learnt to live together. All religions give the message of peace unity and social harmony,” the Prime Minister said in his monthly Man Ki Baat broadcast.

The prime minister began with a special greeting to Muslim people around the world for the month of Ramadan, a “holy month marked by prayers, spirituality and charity.”

One of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, and commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.

In February 2017, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report on the state of religious persecution in India. In May, the University of Central Punjab held a conference urging responsible media reporting on religion.
